CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

Siamo nel profondo Sud degli Stati Uniti, un territorio unico e affascinante dalle montagne al mare, con bellissime città e tante attività outdoor. Qui sono state scritte alcune tra le pagine più drammatiche della storia americana: la schiavitù e la guerra di secessione sono gli eventi più terribili di cui questi luoghi hanno conservato la memoria.

Nel 1729 il South Carolina si separò dal North Carolina includendo l’Upcountry, la regione settentrionale dove gli immigrati gallesi, scozzesi e irlandesi costruirono le loro fattorie. Il Lowcountry a sud era, al contrario, aristocratico, ma dal 1860 non ci furono più differenze fra le regioni e il South Carolina fu il primo Stato a dichiarare l’indipendenza dall’Unione.

CHARLESTON

È una delle città più belle del Sud e capitale del South Carolina. È stata di recente nominata da Travel Leisure città #1 nel mondo da visitare!

Ci sono molti motivi per cui Charleston è così amata e uno dei principali è che è la location perfetta per ogni tipo di viaggio. Il nome è legato a quello del re Carlo I, l’unico re britannico ad essere stato decapitato, e ancora al ballo omonimo che qui è nato. È stata in passato una ricca colonia con piantagioni di tabacco, riso e indaco. I primi spari della guerra di secessione furono esplosi qui, nel porto di Charleston.

Oggi si possono ancora vedere gli edifici storici e le ricche residenze, fare un tour suggestivo in carrozza e gustare la prelibata cucina del Sud.

HIGHLIGHTS

HEYWARD-WASHINGTON HOUSE – Costruita da un coltivatore di riso, ha all’interno una collezione di bellissimi mobili fabbricati a Charleston.

CHARLESTON MUSEUM – Museo molto interessante sulla storia della città. Contiene dipinti di paesaggi e ritratti di personaggi famosi della città.

FORT SUMTER VISITOR CENTER – Si può fare un tour in barca del forte, mentre al centro visite c’è una documentazione sulla prima battaglia della guerra di secessione.

OLD SLAVE MART – Era uno dei mercati più grandi e frequentati del tempo.

ASHLEY RIVER PLANTATIONS – Sono tre dimore coloniali da visitare che danno un’idea di quello che era lo stile di vita nelle campagne.

In King Street ci sono i negozi più ricercati e per tutti i gusti e le esigenze. Se volete qualcosa di unico e locale, fate acquisti da Mercantile+Mash, dove troverete articoli e prodotti tipici della città.

EATING AND DRINKING

La cucina del Sud è molto gustosa e sono moltissimi i locali dove non rimarrete di certo delusi. Eccone alcuni: Goat.Sheep.Cow, Butcher and Bee (lo trovate anche in Nashville), The Darling Oyster Bar, The Cocktail Club.

It is a fascinating region from the mountains to the sea, with beautiful cities rich with history and many outdoor activities to do.

In 1729 South Carolina separated from North Carolina and included the Upcountry, the territory where Welsh, Scottish and Irish immigrants founded their farms. Lowcountry was aristocratic but in 1860 there were no more differences between the two areas, and South Carolina was the first State to declare independence from the Union.

It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the South and capital of South Carolina. It’s been recently named #1 city in the world to visit by Travel + Leisure!

There are many reasons why Charleston is so beloved and one of them is that it is the perfect location for any type of trip. It was a former colony with tobacco, rice and indigo plantations. The first shots of the Civil War were fired at the harbor here in Charleston. You can still visit the historic buildings and the rich mansions, go on a carriage tour and learn about the local history and have a taste of the great Southern cuisine.

HEYWARD-WASHINGTON HOUSE – Built by Daniel Heyward, a rice farmer, with rich local furniture inside.CHARLESTON MUSEUM – It’s a very interesting museum about the history of the city. GIBBES MUSEUM OF ART – Beautiful landscapes and portraits of local people. FORT SUMTER VISITOR CENTER – You can go on a tour of the Fort by boat and learn about the first battle of the Civil War. OLD SLAVE MART – One of the biggest colonial slave markets. ASHLEY RIVER PLANTATIONS – There are three colonial mansions to visit which give you the idea of the lifestyle in the countryside.
